The Ice Cream Truck's Got A New Tune!

The ice cream truck's got a new tune. Now, you may not find this very exciting, but I do. I realize that by July I'll be sick of it but for now it's very nice to hear something different than what we heard all last summer. I don't know the tune, but the first few notes make it sound like it's going to be the hymn "It Is Well With My Soul" but then a dog barks and it turns into something else. Then a chicken squawks and a horn honks - so ya. It's going to annoy me later but for now, I'll take it!

Today I met Leo the Pug. He was a very sweet doggy with very red buggy eyes. And his ears were taped because, his owner said, Leo was going to be in a Show this weekend and they need to lay right. I said I thought that was much kinder than a curling iron.

Leo didn't laugh at that one. Neither did his owner.

Humor is like that. You throw stuff out. Sometimes it's a winner and sometimes you go crawl under the rug. But for someone like me, getting the good laughs is worth the occasional flop.

And it occurred to me recently that sharing our stories is like that too. Sometimes you tell things about yourself and it connects with the other person and you click. Other times you get the blank stare or the downward gaze/uncomfortable scootch in the chair/throat clearing. And again - it's a gamble, but getting the good clicks is worth the occasional weirdness.

Hey, wouldn't it be nice to be able to hand a humor/conversational comfort zone questionnaire to folks so that you would know what topics to steer clear of?

  • I was laughing when you said that they did not find that funny. Yikes! I really do understand! We have a wicked sense of humor here at work. Three of us go to the same Sunday School class. One will say something...the other 2 will think it hilarious and then there are the 20 others that look at you with big eyes and you know....right then and there...they have placed you on their prayer list.

  • Oh geeze - this is sooo true. Sometimes you post things that you think are just way too funny. Then you hit the publish button and all you get are deer in the headlights stares and the sound of crickets chirping. *blink.* *blink, blink.*

    - livin' at the bottom of that prayer list.

  • btw - It is Well With My Soul is one of my favorites. The thought of it coming from an ice cream truck is either way too cool or soberingly disturbed. Not sure which.

  • Sometimes it is even funnier when I am the only one who sees the humour....this post makes me remember being a dickie dee ice cream person the first summer afer college....it was brutal. Chugged my way up a hill only to be asked if I was a girl? Dug to the bottom of the cart just to have the kid call me a b**** and run away laughing. I had to pay for every opened container and that darn kid must have known. He must have had a (wicked)sense of humour eh?
