Up Your Nose With some Hydrogen Peroxide!

Mr. Samson's neck issues are finally a thing of the past, we think -- look at that!! I found him this way in his crib one day, on his own. No longer must we "force" him to exercise his neck! His Torticollis is much better and our lazy days are OVER! This little guy gets around by rolling and scooting and he's keeping us very busy.

Last week, we all had colds. We got over them pretty fast, but it wasn't any fun in the meantime.

I remembered a self-cure I tried once that I am finally able to confess. It took me a long while to be able to talk about this issue with anyone outside my close circle of friends and family but now, this is beginning to be funny and I don't mind sharing it.

It all started with the Internet. I know I shouldn't get important health information from just anywhere on the internet, but I was reading about how some folks believe that the flu (and maybe cold viruses) enter through the ears and not the eyes, mouth or nose, like commonly thought. I thought hM. Why not? So I looked around at other sites and found out it's OK to clean ones ears with Hydrogen Peroxide. I have used the stuff for years on cuts and scrapes to clean them out and help them heal so I thought why not? So I dropped some in my ears once when I felt a cold or flu virus coming on. It fizzed and popped for a long time, I dumped it out, and repeated until there was no fizzing. My ears were clean as a whistle, and I at least THOUGHT I felt better.

It worked like a charm, so I expanded on that thought and began to think that if a Rhinovirus is in the nose, maybe I could kill the virus by putting Hydrogen Peroxide up my nose. So I tried that. I put it on a Q-tip and let the stuff bubble and foam and that was pretty cool. Rinsed with Saline Solution and repeated until I felt it was pretty clean. Again, I thought I felt a little better. I certainly wasn't congested!

Then I had an even MORE BRILLIANT idea that perhaps I should get the hydrogen peroxide higher UP into my nose! I could really kill off more of those germs lurking around in those crannies! So I put some in a medicine dropper and SQUIRT! Up my nose! I immediately regretted my decision, as it foamed and popped in places that shouldn't be foaming and popping! It HURT!! My nose bled just a little for about 3 days and was raw and sore for about a week!

Lesson Learned. There's a reason the bottle says that it's not to be taken internally.

What about you? Maybe you've got a stupid bizarre self -healing attempt you could write a post about or leave here in the comments. I doubt I'm alone in this entirely!

  • I can't think of any self-healing events at the moment, but I'll try to come up with one! Most of my injuries are either related to lack of attention or overextending myself.
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  • Ok, I totally swear by the peroxide in the ears thing. Works great on sinus infections. It may be for reals or "all in my head", but either way I feel better.

I never considered sniffing it up my nose, but my doctor used to always try to get me to suck warm salt water up my nose to help with allergies and colds. That hurt like hell!

  • I was doing some research on Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) and the Cold Virus and came across your Blog. What you did was absolutely correct but you used the incorrect concentration and method for your nose. Our noses are very sensitive and you cannot use the full strength for your nose. I swear by Hydrogen Peroxide for Colds. I haven't tested it for Flu yet. It doesn’t work right away; you have to be patient with it. I don't suggest that you use it everyday on your nose either. Only at the first sign of cold. I've been rinsing and gargling with H2O2 for the past 3 months for my chronic bad breath. I dilute a 50% water and 50% H2O2 and a small amount of salt. It works like a charm, where nothing had worked before (Listerine, gum, bills, diet, etc.). My wife can finally kiss me again. Last week I came down with a nasty cold. By 8:30 AM I was miserable, stuffy nose, runny eyes, sneezing, the works. I thought I have to put this theory to work. I started with my 50/50 solution. I took a cotton swab, dipped it into the solution and coated my nose as high as I could go, but not overdoing it. Without inhaling it (breathe through your mouth) I did the same for the other nostril. Waited 10 seconds and blew my nose. I repeated the same procedure, and for the final step, used a cotton swab to rinse the H2O2 out of my nose with a warm saline solution. After that I gargled with the H2O2 and used water to rinse it out. Next I used a clean dropper and put 1 drop of the full strength (3%) solution in each ear canal (if it irritates your ear, then use the dilute it). I waited 10 seconds and rinsed it out with warm water and dried it out with a clean swab. I did these 3 steps every 2 hours for a total of 3 times. I figured I would kill the virus weather it was in my nose, ear, or throat. By 4 PM I felt 80% better so I stopped the treatment. I felt so great that I went out and played tennis. Never in my life had I ever had a 8-hour cold. The darn thing always lingers in my body for at least 10 days. The next day I felt great, but I felt that because I played tennis the night before the virus may come back, so I repeated the e step procedure and by noon I was 100%. I don't suggest you use this on kids under 15 years of age, because it does irritate the nose a bit. You have to make sure that you never use it in its full strength. Always dilute it in water. 50/50 is the safest and best. If you have a sensitive nose, you can reduce the concentration. Never spray it either. You cannot control it, and you sure as heck cannot inhale it. It is a topical solution and if used properly it really can eliminate the virus if used on the onset. Don't forget to rinse any surface afterwards. Some website claim that a few doctors believe that the cold virus incubates in you ears, however according to Zicam’s website (a zinc based cold remedy) the cold virus starts incubating in your nose. They say if you use Zicam with in the first 2 days, it will greatly reduce the duration. They are correct. I used Zicam last year, however it does not work as well and as fast as hydrogen peroxide. This thing is absolutely great only if used correctly, repeatedly, and most importantly in diluted concentrations.

  • wow, this post is still getting attention!
thanks to Anonymous for the explanation. I had thought of diluting it, but haven't tried the new method yet.... I will do that next time I get a cold.

I think the reason Zicam works is that Zinc coats surfaces so that viruses can't stick. This is the way Cranberry juice works for bladder infections and such things. The darn things just slide right off. H2O2 kills by oxygenating, so it makes sense... just gotta get the dilution right, I suppose.

And to Mr. I can't smell anymore... sorry - maybe a diluted solution would help. I hope you get your scents back!

  • I get some kind of weird sores in my nose sometimes and I have found that using H2O2 on them helps clean it up so it doesn't hurt as much.

I'm sure there's some other thing I should probably be doing but I'm just lazy and don't go to the doctor hardly ever.

I'm glad I looked this up! I'll be sure to dilute it before using it from now on. I never used much and only used a wet Q-tip on the sore area. Scary to know that it could cause so much pain and I'm glad I didn't get any bright ideas and try to use it like saline up the sinuses!!

  • I got the flu/cold a few times and put food grade 3% h2o2 in ears let it bubble till it stopped. Did this 3x a day also put 2 drops in each nostril 2x a day. Cold was gone in 36 hours. This is the third time I did this 3 different times in 2 yrs. I’m hooked.
good luck and make sure if you are diluting it use distilled water.

  • I have been experimenting with hydrogen peroxide on q-tips for the past week, and has made a world of difference! I still have stuff coming out of my nose like crazy...always thought that my nose was just crooked, but my left nostril was almost completly blocked by a polyp?? Heard of people who have had them surgically removed, and they come back. All I can say, is it is shrinking layer by layer. I think I have had chronic sinus infections over the years that have been covered by biofilms. The peroxide seems to be breaking down the biofilms. My nose is slimmer now too...these polyps deformmed my nose! I get logs of mucus, blood and these black things and round things that look like worms or parasites. Gross I know, but I feel a heck of alot better, and can breath again!

  • I was told I could pass a urine drug test if I drank vinegar so I had a small dixie cup full then to rid the awful flavor I went to brush my teeth, well the toothpaste had baking soda in it and it cause a chemical reaction in my mouth and down my throat it hurt very bad and i couldn't breath I was suffocating,, I ran to the fridge and guuuuuzled some milk and calmed it down, went to hospital my ph levels where thrown off very badly it was bad don't let that happen to u.

  • Theres a few things I do for self healing I had some zicam which clearly has some eucalyptus in it and it was about half empty so in a cup I mixed 1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide 2 parts water and filled the rest of my zicam bottle with it. I used this mixture and it cleared me right up the zicam also had a cooling affect in my sinuses which made the h2o2 less irritating. I have an empty sore thoat spray bottle i put h2o2 into to spray that pesky sore spot that develops between my nose and thoat often i will inhale while spaying it so it can possibly reach the bronchial tubes as well. always helps me breathe better. I will also take grapefruit seed extract and do the drops in my ears after using h202 and take the gse in pill form also. I also will take about 1 teaspoon of food grade diatomaceous earth aka fossil shell flour which claims to fight viral infections and parasites. I use fossil shell flour to scrub my teeth and 3% h202 as mouth wash my mouth has never felt cleaner. I very rarely get sick any more but I am always looking for other remedies or uses for the ones I already know about.

  • yeah its not good to mix vinegar and h2o2 in your body but it works wonders for cleaning counter tops in the kitchen. there are a few ways to detox for a urinalysis vinegar is acidic and will help detox, also activated charcoal works well for that. You can also drink mass quantities of orange juice. I wonder how food grade diatomaceous earth does as a detox for that, i know it is something that is used as a detox but i dont know if it bonds with THC that would be something to look into. havent smoked in over a decade but i drank about 4 gallons of orange juice prior to drug testing for job corps and my test came out clean.

  • on a side note h202 reacts very strongly to silver if you use 35% h202 and drop some silver in it it has almost an explosive reaction also h202 can dissolve copper and anything dipped into the solution will be coated in a fine layer of copper. h202 really is a fascinating compound.

Vinegar and baking soda work great to get some stains out of carpet but can have a bleaching effect if left on for too long.

if you bake bakng soda for a good long while it becomes soda ash which is used to set dyes into clothing.

oh also never mix alcohol and powdered chlorine it will explode if shaken. I heard about someone who did that and shook the bottle with their hand around the bottle and it blew their hand off.

  • I had really bad dry sore nose so i decided to dab peroxide inside my nose. That was all fine until I made the mistake of using my sinus rinse. I figured, I can just flush the peroxide out with water. No. The water shot the peroxide into my nasal passages and throat. It smelled like something was burning and I took a hot shower and couldn't put my face under the spray because i felt like my breathing was mildly compromised when my head was back. Hopefully i did no permanent damage. I worry that i got peroxide into my lungs thru inhaling. Did i mention i JUST did this an hour ago?

  • h2o2 while being very inexpensive it does sting quite a bit and should never ever be used full strength because your mucus membranes are very sensitive as we have heard from many people who have posted. It works well for some people and not for others. If you are hesitant about using it then go for the slightly more expensive alternatives. If you mix 3 drops of grapefruit seed extract with about 5 drops of eucalyptus extract in a nasal spray bottle it will clear the sinuses just as effectively as h2o2 as well as having an antiviral affect like the h2o2 without the stinging this helps immensely when it is illness that your contending with. If it is seasonal allergies... I have used prednisone in the past and now use Dong Quai Root along with Swansons Boswellia & Curcumin herbal supplement which is every bit as effective and does not have any of the nasty long term side effects that you get with steroids like Prednisone. The mixture of Curcumin and Dong Quai serve as an excellent Prednisone Alternative for other ailments that steroids are used to treat also. Good luck with feeling better guys!

  • First, this is a great site. Now, let me tell you all about my experience. My boys were confirmed of having the flu at the doctor's office. I immediately went home found my bottle of saline nse spray, mixed 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 3 parts saline. I started spraying in my nose 1 X every 2 hours for 12 hours. It has been 48 hours now and no flu. I also take elderberry syrup and zinc lozenges. The boys are very congested but thats because I don't use the hydrogen peroxide on them. You can feel the spray loosen the mucus up and it becomes much easier to expel.
